Local Karate Instructor Happy to be Celebrating 40th Year in Palisades While adorning the walls and shelves of his new dojo with photos and memorabilia, Gerry Blanck unpacked a box containing a framed picture of his very first group of karate students in 1982. On Sunday, Blanck hosted a re-opening party in celebration of his 40th anniversary in the Palisades and the first month in his new dojo—located at 16624 Marquez Avenue. “It’s hard not to get a little nostalgic when I think back over all the years and all the memories I’ve built here—the Palisades is a special place, there are so many stories I could tell, so many interesting people I’ve met and trained and above all I’m so fortunate to have been a part of this community for so long,” said Blanck, who was promoted to 8th-degree black belt in 2015 by GrandMaster Katsuoh Yamamoto, founder of Yoshukai Karate, a martial arts discipline which incorporates forms, sparring, board-breaking and self-defense. Like many local businesses adversely affected by the coronavirus pandemic, Blanck had to switch to Zoom classes, private lessons at people’s homes and clinics on the lawn at the Palisades Recreation Center.
